Tonight I’m venue hopping again. Starting off in Club Academy for Document. I love this venue, but it’s been a while since I’ve been down here. It was either for PWEI or a near religious experience watching Tim Booth. Anyway tonight starts with these 5 lads tearing up the place with their frankly terrifying brand of post rock. They look sharp but give you the feeling of being hit with something blunt and heavy… in a good way of course. Dripping with lounge act scuzz, it’s as close as you’ll get to a perfect half hour set. It’s slow, fast and sexy apocalyptic stuff with the rhythm section set to wage war and the guitars shredding a wall of glorious noise, all doused in menacing sleaze and held together with those snarling vocals. I love this band. Debut album soon please. It’s pretty full already, great to see for the support. I’m sure it will fill even more for the awesome Mysterines, but I’m not gonna find out. I’ve got to dash across town, but I’ve already got a ticket for their next show. Seriously The Mysterines are great. I’m blowing them off though to catch Wet Leg at Night & Day. It’s sold out in the iconic cafe and everyone is waiting to hear their breakout debut single Chaise Longue, but before that we’re treated to nearly an hour of slightly surf tinged songs full of choppy hooks, witty lyrics and more funk than I was expecting. That’s to say they’re fun, a lot of fun. They’re incredibly new and full of mistakes, but laugh it all off delightfully. In fact they’re all so smiley you’d forgive them pretty much anything. I don’t know how many gigs they’ve played, it doesn’t matter, the songs are there and they’re clearly having a blast playing them. There’s a good half dozen songs that I fall instantly in love with. They seem a bit embarrassed by their success, but Night & Day quite rightly adore them and by the time we get to that song, they’ve got us in the palm of their sweaty hands. So good, they’ve been off stage about 15 minutes and already I can’t wait to see them again.
