I’ve dashed here from another gig to find the band I wanted to see, My First Time, have pulled out. Gutted. The headline spot then is taken by Morn, who I know nothing about. This is a Mood Swings night though, a regular slot that won’t let you down and I’m soon being bludgeoned by some dirty bass in Yes’ packed basement. They’re loud and raw, the sound thick and sludgy, but in a good way. They sound like Fontaines DC on the first song, before things take a decidedly artrock punk swerve. It’s breakneck stuff, that makes way for theatrically slow centrepiece, before some mammoth riffs get the kids jumping around and my foot tapping. Vocal duties are shared, but honestly live, it’s all about the guitars. They might sound different on record. I’m intrigued to hear what ‘Modern Man’ sounds like recorded, but in the room it’s pretty decent. This isn’t a big space and it’s not full, but it gets well used as a pit opens up and the place explodes momentarily, encouraged by the singer getting stuck in and the lad on guitar soloing wildly. They do dark moody grunge quite well too. Light on melody, they opt more for the gut punch and I’m all for that when done well. Which this is. I’m not sure how long they’ve been around, but if they’re quite fresh, I’m intrigued as to where they’ll go. The crowd seems to like them too, particularly the “fuck yeah” guy. The pit kicks off again for something called ‘Demolition’, but I’m taken with the slower atonal moments. They keep me hooked though with a short spiky half and hour set. I’ll have to catch My First Time another time.
