I’m not the biggest fan of Yes’ Pink Room, but tonight we’re in The Basement which is 10 times better. The sound in here, trapped in cozy concrete sounds huge. It suits The Wants and their razor sharp post punk perfectly. Instruments are attacked and they attack back. It’s a sound that takes me back to teenage years, travelling on late night trains, freedom far from home. That’s to say, it’s exciting. Motorik drums, low slung bass hugs and angular guitars, they’re the epitome of cool. After 30 minutes they attempt to leave the stage as calls of “one more song!” ring out. Thing is they don’t appear prepared for an encore so we get a repeat of forthcoming album title track ‘Container’, but a brilliantly wild, brutal and industrial sounding version. That debut album is out in a few weeks, I can’t wait!
