The Libertines are a weird band for me. A band that always felt on the brink, so I guess I never really got that attached. They set the bar with debut ‘Up The Bracket’ so high. Where else would they go? The self titled follow up was great… but not as great and I’ve pretty much forgotten that long awaited third album that came years later. Despite the first two albums being great. The tabloid fodder got in the way and they became more of an idea of rebellion than the music itself. I’m baffled they’re still here to be honest, but I’m glad they are. People will make fun of Pete looking big and grey haired, but fuck that. It’s a bloody miracle he’s here at all, he looks happy and sounds… okay. As Pete and Carl take to the stage dressed as Dickensian urchins, they kick off with ‘What a Waster’ and the beer goes flying. It sounds a bit shit though and only improves when they get to ‘Up The Bracket’ and ‘Gunga Din’ when the crowd start bouncing. It’s all arms aloft for ‘What Katie Did’ and so after a shaky start, it definitely improves. Largely due to the crowds enthusiasm that makes even the more mediocre songs sound good. ‘Boys in the Band’ and ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ do sound huge. The latter bringing out a ridiculous number of phones. Seriously what do people do with all those shit videos? They’re still shambolic, but now on purpose rather than drug restricted ability. It’s good though. Mostly. Truth is I feel like a zombie tonight, I really could do with a rest, but songs like ‘Horrorshow’ are exactly what I need to stay awake. It’s not a great gig, but it’s not bad and it’s probably better than I expected. Although I could do without the impromptu version of ‘The Only Way is Up’. I HATE that song. The crowd too although great for atmosphere, are made up of a large percentage of idiots, but y’know… “Fuck em”. Drew McConnell was on base duty instead of John Hassall. I’m not sure why. Maybe John didn’t fancy it. I can sort of see John’s point. Ultimately only a half decent show and I’ll probably skip their Up The Bracket anniversary gig in the city next summer.
