I’ve a confession. It’s been a while since I listened to Rufus Wainwright really. I loved Poses and Want back in the day, but other than the odd daly here and there, I’ve not kept up. If you’re a fan though, have a listen to the latest album ‘Unfollow The Rules’, you won’t be disappointed. If you like Rufus, you’re here for the voice. The new stuff sounds great, Damsel in Distress being one of my favourites, with its slight feel of Nick Drake… but with Rufus’ vocals lifting and soaring to reach me up in the Bridgwater’s Gallery seats. My god, however wonderful Rufus sounds on record, it really does not prepare you for witnessing him live. We’ve a double bass on stage, some guitar and of course a lovely imposing piano. Despite not being familiar with all the songs it’s easy to get swept up. There’s no singing along either of course, that was much more of an Erasure sort of thing last night. In The Bridgewater you sit and appreciate. I know that sounds stuffy, but these songs are delicate and it really is much more natural just to ease into your chair and let Rufus carry you away. Fear not though, it turns out Rufus is a riot and full of witty and wonderful stories to get everyone chuckling between songs… and occasionally during. He’s a delight. These songs, drift, sweep and soar at Rufus’ will. His voice always beautifully controlled, powerful and with a truly inspiring range. The band behind him though are wonderful too, packing each song with warm melodies. It’s perfect. It has to be said though, that when the band leave and Rufus is left alone with the piano, it’s magical. There’s just something transformative about the intimacy with one instrument and one voice, even in this vast space. It’s the sort of performance to feel honoured to have witnessed and with that in mind I’m dedicating this to my aunty who isn’t too well right now and loves both Rufus and The Bridgewater. Thinking of you x
