Tonight’s gig at the always fabulous Albert Hall is Rodrigo y Gabriela, definitely something a little different for me, but my god are they brilliant. These two Mexicans armed with a couple of guitars are incredible. To be fair it’s Gabriela who seems to do most of the work, providing breathtaking rhythm. She’s all over the guitar with fingers that move so fast and intricate, it’s hard to take your eyes off her. She attacks the guitar with some kind of spiritual abandon. Rodrigo is no slouch either, layering licks over the top as instrumentals pieces, build and swoop with spectacular grace. There’s a looong cover of Floyd’s Echoes, that although great, does drag the tiniest bit, but it’s all about light and shade. For every mellow moment, there’s raucous rock outs that would put their beloved Metallica and Slayer to shame. As they wave goodbye, ACDCs ‘For Those About to Rock’ blasts out, but it’s most certainly the audience that’s saluting them!
