Mogwai are a serious band. Playing serious music. On the surface. Dig deeper though and you’ll find a band populated by five unassuming, pleasant men that simply make powerful and beautiful music... but what power! The always impeccable Albert Hall PA struggles to contain them, not surprising for a band famed for testing the threshold of venues all over the world. It’s not all about the volume though, there’s melody and warmth to Mogwai’s music and where bands like GY!BE envelope you in a wonderful suffocating hug, Mogwai do the same whilst digging you in the ribs, with hooks and ear worms to make sure they’ve not smashed you into a rhythmic coma. Yes it’s dark, it’s cinematic to the point of blurring your peripheral vision, but this music sneaks up on you, fills you up, makes you smile, dare I say moves you... even if it’s just the devastating bass vibrating you across the floor!
