A couple of great new bands tonight. First warming us up from the drizzle outside are Bloodhound from Hull. A three piece playing distinctly grunge laden riffs, but with an untethered freedom that makes them a lot of fun to watch. Singer Max has a fine head of hair and even better voice. Bassist Will you can tell feels every note and drummer Bex teases the kit one minute then hits it like it’s wronged her in some way the next. They’re great! Another one to keep an eye on. Keep an eye on stands for Man of Moon too. I’ve seen this Scottish pair before, in the time before the world turned upside down and it’s great to see them back in town. They’re a slightly darker prospect. Playing a sort of psyche alt rock, whatever the fuck that means, we really should stop trying to label everything. It’s a bloody great sound from just two people. That’s always the case isn’t it though. Do duos find they’ve more to prove? I dunno, but they pass any test with flying colours. Their debut came out in lockdown and tonight they feel more confident with an arsenal of songs behind them. The atmospheric grooves tease, shift, build and go off gloriously. Almost linking songs together in places. It feels very cinematic. Ride The Waves still sounds fantastic and gets an early outing. It’s epic stuff, with the newer stuff sounding even more melodic. They’re certainly not sticking to a simple formula. That dark tone often serves as a backbone though, keeping them on track and making them sound magnificent, especially Coming Back which might be my new favourite. They really keep you on your toes. Michael Reid plays the drums with a sharp energy that can turn fast and if your not expecting it, sucker punch you as the next rhythm takes hold. Chris Bainbridge is no slouch on guitar either (or bass!!), the songs gliding along as the pair lock in. The vocals too are beautiful. The harmonious Scottish brogue deployed beautifully. There’s a good crowd, who shout praise at every opportunity. It’s not full, but I suspect the crowds and rooms will get bigger. The album Dead Sea is out, give it a listen.
