I first saw John Grant in this very venue nearly 3 years to the day. That night he was fantastic. Quite a lot has changed in that time though and tonight Grant revealed himself as a genuine icon and star. Whether it’s the beautiful melodies of the earlier work laced with sharp and often hysterical lyrics or the synth heavy club bangers of the newer albums, all are accompanied by Johns staggeringly wonderful voice that majestically sores in the amazing Albert Hall. It’s a celebration, a party, a complete unadulterated release and it’s marvellous. The audience hug one another and throw shapes on the packed floor, some adorned with makeup echoing Johns colourful glitter warpaint, others wear sensible jumpers for the Manchester cold to greet them later. All are welcome, all are here to revel in something quite unique and all are rewarded with something simply magical. I know I gush a lot about the gigs I go to (I try not to buy tickets to gigs I won’t love), but seriously, if you’ve not yet listened to John Grant, give him a go and if you can, catch him live, he’s spectacular!
