Tonight’s gig is the epitome of chilled. C Duncan deals in jazz infused dreampop with a warmth that cuts through the drab weather outside. Luscious synths and piano melodies teamed with cinematic vocals it’s all rather timeless and life affirming. Mr Duncan himself has a fantastic voice reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, albeit with slightly less power, but it suits the mood perfectly. The rest of the four piece are great too, despite throwing the odd overly sincere ‘I’m really feeling this’ facial expression. The drummer in particular, who looks a bit like Murray from Flight of the Concords, but who smashes out some effortlessly spectacular jazz rhythms. Admittedly the new album, that I’d not heard until tonight, veers into the loungier side of things, but still sounds good. The debut ‘Architect’ though is still the high water mark for me and the songs stand out in the set. Seriously, it’s amazing and spurred me to the merch stand and wait for (C)hris to sign it. All in all, a very pleasant hour spent in the always wonderful Band on the Wall.
