With being in Yes’ Basement on Friday night and again tonight, it’s almost like Bauhaus in London last night didn’t happen. It did, I took photos. What a brilliant weekend of gigs and what better band to top it off with than Bdrmm. I’ve sung their praises before and there really are some amazing new bands around right now. Bdrmm though I think are my favourites. I have the occasional dally with other bands in this top spot, but always find myself coming back to Hull’s finest. Their debut album has become my go to choice every time I need a good solid musical fix. Live though they’re different, this is music to get lost in. Tonight back in a very rainy Manchester, Bdrmm are the perfect antidote to the conditions. They’re a shoegazey grunge, blissed out soundtrack to a Lynch film where everything works out just fine. The vocals are beautiful. I mean really beautiful, there’s no other word for it. They transport you to a dream like place as the guitars sweep and swirl in epic building melodies. I’ve seen them a fair few times now and swear they keep getting better, tighter, stronger. They need to be, this works because of the subtle grooves, hooks and maelstrom guitars. If they weren’t so good, it’d collapse. Instead there’s a feeling of something holding them together and that same something oozes off stage, bringing us all in with a warm embrace. I know all this sounds very flowery and the tone overall is positive, but that’s not to say they’re short on power. Far from it, this room barely contains them as they flex and stride through a truly majestic set. Newer songs like ‘Port’ do suggest that something darker is coming with the next album and I for one can’t wait. If you’ve not yet listened to or seen Bdrmm, remedy that quick, before they’re selling out Ally Pally.
