It’s cold outside, bloody cold and I’m tired. It’s my 50th gig of the year though and inside Gorilla tonight, it’s hot and no one is sleeping. Amyl and the Sniffers, a bunch of ridiculously fun Aussie punks are tearing the place up. I saw them earlier this year and if I’m honest, tonight is essentially much of the same. The same though is awesome, an hour of blistering punk pummelling your very soul. Singer Amy is ferocious and fantastic, stalking the stage it’s knackering just watching her. I daren’t get anywhere near her, she’s terrifying, shadow boxing and gripping the mic like it’s an incendiary device. That’s not the point here though, this is a gang, open and accepting, if you’re here you’re part of it. All shapes, sizes, ages and styles make up the sold out crowd and if one goes down, there’s no shortage of limbs to lift you up and hold you aloft in a celebration of pure anger channeled energy, or to put it in Amy’s words “Consensual violence only”. For a little over an hour I’m transported into a world of slashed denim, mullets and DMs, it’s an absolutely marvellous cauldron of stage diving, crowd surfing, air punching madness and I really don’t wanna leave. Lyrics are simple and riffs are simpler, but in times of utter chaos, this seems the perfect antidote. All rock bands take note, this is how it’s fuckin done!
